Mel is a voice coach as well as an acting and presentation coach. She was part of the voice team at The Royal Shakespeare Company in the early nineties, Head of Voice at Rose Bruford College and then Head of Voice & Text with the New Shakespeare Company at Regents Park Open Air Theatre 1996 - 2007. From 2001-4 Mel served on the council of The British Voice Association and was part of their educationworking party until 2008. She has an MA in Voice Studies from Central School of Speech and Drama in London (as well as an MA in Performing Arts from Middlesex University) and a certificate from the International Phonetics Association.
She runs voice and confidence classes at the Actors Centre, London from time to time and works with people one-to-one from her home base in London plus Suffolk/Norfolk (melchurcher@hotmail.com) (Northwood Hills tube on Metropolitan line) and at the Drill Hall. Minimum of 2 hour session.
Mel also now offers coaching via webcam on Skype. This is not available for people in the UK (unless under exceptional circumstances) as it can in no way be a substitute for teaching in person. However, it can help for specific things like approaching texts such as classical texts, organising audition pieces, giving some thoughts on an audition or screen test or working on a standard British accent. I have just tried this with an actor in Germany and this was the reponse after the session: 'It was an interesting way to get coached. I think I would prefer working with you "live" but in a situation like I'm in now and I'm unable to fly to London, it is a good alternative.' For webcam coaching: contact me by email in the first instance. Then we will have a free Intro session (15mins max.) to see if the equipment works and if the subject matter is possible. Payment is made through PayPal and is £50 (GBP) for a 50min. session.
